A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader from North 24 Parganas, Atish Sarkar, alias Jhanku, has been suspended from the party after a video surfaced in which he threatened to deface photographs of protesting women and hang them on walls. Sarkar made the controversial statement, saying, "I will hang the distorted pictures of the mothers and sisters of those who make derogatory remarks on CM Mamata Banerjee."
The remarks were made against the backdrop of ongoing protests over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape case, where a 31-year-old second-year PG trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered on August 9. The incident occurred in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital while the victim was sleeping during her 36-hour shift. The autopsy revealed sexual assault and 25 external and internal injuries on her body.
Sarkar's comments have sparked outrage, leading to his suspension from the TMC.
